The West Quoddy Head Light Keepers'
Association (WQHLKA) ended the Visitor Center's first year of operation on
October 19th when they co-hosted the Run for Red Ribbon road race, with Downeast
Healthy Tomorrows.
A heartfelt Thank You from the Officers of
the Association, to the twenty-two volunteers who staffed the Center 6 hours a
day, 7 days a week, and to the many individuals, families and businesses who
supported the Association by becoming members of the WQHLKA. Thanks also, to the
more than 18,000 visitors who signed in at the Center - they came from every
state in the Union, twenty-nine other countries, all Provinces of Canada and all
but two of the Canadian Territories. |

Activity at the Center was brisk from mid-May to closing, with visitors
satisfying their endless curiosity by browsing the Displays and Exhibits, and
asking volunteers countless questions about the history of the WQH Lighthouse
and Lubec, and for information on where to stay, where to eat, and where to shop
in Lubec. Fund-raising raffles held this Season brought in additional funds to
the Center. The winners are:
Lighthouse Rug - Roy Meyer, Newton, N. J.
Twenty-four Miniature Lighthouses - Richard Morris, Braintree, MA
Lighthouse Collage Painting - Ray Kiesel, Landsdale, PA.
Displaying works of art placed on consignment in the Art Gallery by local
artisans, proved to be very successful. Monies realized from those sales, added
to the sale of memberships, raffle tickets, and visitor donations, contributed
to the Center's 2002 operating and maintenance costs. As we look ahead to 2003
we recognize that to support the ongoing operation of the Center next year the
WQHLKA needs to raise an additional $5,000. To this end, a membership drive is
being planned, targeting renewals and new memberships from individuals, families
and businesses in Lubec, the surrounding towns, and through the Membership page
on the Visitor Center's web site.
Other activity in progress includes writing advertising copy for several 2003
Maine travelers publications and redesigning the web site, soon to be seen
online at www.westquoddy.com. Also, additional Exhibits are planned to be in
place for next Season, for which the Officers of the Association extend
heartfelt thanks to Ron Pesha for these and his many other valuable
contributions to the Visitors Center throughout the year.
A good Winter season to everyone! See you come Spring!
