Spring 2006
|
Welcome back members and friends of the West
Quoddy Head Light Keepers Association!
The Visitor Center opens for the 2006 season on May 27th.
The volunteer staff is preparing to greet visitors from around the world and we
hope to exceed the number who came to see us from all over the world last year.
Over the winter months the Association’s
Board of Directors and volunteer members planned for this season and beyond. To
this end, the Budget Committee did the necessary work to support the Association
operating and maintaining the Visitor Center and the ongoing cost of keeping the
Exhibit Halls attractive to visitors. |

The Exhibits committee designed and installed some excellent new exhibits, which
we trust you’ll find informative and interesting.
To keep the public informed, the Public Relations Committee began the process of
advertising West Quoddy Head Light and Visitor Center in appropriate magazines
and Summer Guides - particularly including the 4th Anniversary Celebration which
will be held on July 8th this year. Check out
the Special Events page for more details.
A Planning Committee has been formed for the 2008 200th Anniversary of the
lighthouse. If you would like to contribute ideas for that very special event
please call the Visitor Center.
The Fundraising Committee worked to ensure that the Lighthouse memorabilia will
be available for purchase at local gift shops. Do remember to stop by for your
souvenirs, either at the
West Quoddy Gift Shop near the lighthouse, or Puffin Pines Country Store in
Whiting. Also, raffle items this season will
include the ever-popular West Quoddy Head Lighthouse Rug and a set of excellent
Lighthouse photographs already matted and framed. Stop by for your tickets!
Business Memberships expire on June 30th and renewal notices are on their way to
our loyal members. When your notice arrives, please remember to renew! And if
you’re not yet a member do call the Visitor Center to ask for details of the
benefits of membership available to your business - 207-733-2180.
The Visitor Center manager, with the support of the Art Gallery Committee, is
contacting local artists to exhibit their art work in the Art Gallery again this
year.
And did you notice the new look of our website? The Website Committee is
responsible for overseeing that work. Should you have any comments about the new
design we’d be glad to hear from you.
The Strategic Planning Committee met a few times during the winter months.
Action is being taken on two of their recommendations. A bicycle rack will be
installed near the Visitor Center and a new sign, indicating the Visitor Center,
will be placed adjacent to the large car park in the Park. Our thanks to Tim
Hall, Regional Manager of the Maine Bureau of Lands and Parks, who oversees the
Park with the able assistance of John Smith.
Our last items of news and of equal importance are the ongoing record keeping
and data management project and the Association's archives. To assist with the
former, current and past Committee members are trying to find time to complete
information about the many volunteer tasks that they do. This information will
provide future Association Board members and volunteers alike, with a
user-friendly resource to understand the operation and management of the
Association. The archives are being compiled and maintained under the capable
guidance of the current archivist, Ron Pesha.
We are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible this season, so
until then - enjoy Spring and head on down to see us at the Visitor Center, at
the easternmost point of land in the continental USA!
