Spring 2007
Welcome back to members and friends of the West Quoddy Head Light Keepers
Association!
The Visitor Center opens for the 2007 season on May 26th. The volunteer staff is
preparing to greet visitors from around the world and we hope to exceed the
number (18,042) who came to see us from all over the world, last year.
Over the winter months the Association’s Board of Directors and volunteer
members planned for this season and beyond. To this end, the Budget Committee
did the necessary work to support the Association operating and maintaining the
Visitor Center and the ongoing cost of keeping the Exhibit Halls attractive to
visitors.
To this end the Exhibits committee acquired a larger screen TV to show the "Up
the Tower" video, now on DVD.
The Public Relations Committee began advertising West Quoddy Head Light and
Visitor Center in appropriate magazines and Summer Guides - with particular
focus on the 5th Anniversary Celebration, to be held on July 7th. This year the
Anniversary Celebration is dedicated to the memory of “Mr. Lighthouse,“ Kenneth
Black, USCG. Go to our
Special Events page for more information.
A Planning Committee has been formed for the 200th Anniversary of the lighthouse
to be celebrated in 2008. If you would like to contribute ideas for that very
special event please call the Visitor Center.
The Fundraising Committee assures us that the Lighthouse memorabilia will be
available for purchase at local gift shops. Do remember to stop by for your
souvenirs, either at the West Quoddy Gift Shop near the lighthouse, or Puffin
Pines Country Store in Whiting. This season’s raffle items will include the last
available, ever-popular West Quoddy Head Lighthouse Rug and Fred Hartman has
kindly donated a piece of his own artwork. The winning tickets will be drawn in
October.
The Visitor Center manager, with the support of the Art Gallery Committee, is
contacting local artists to exhibit their art work in the Art Gallery again this
year. Come in and see the talent of the Washington County artists.
Individual, Family and Business Memberships expire on June 30th. Renewal notices
have been sent out. When your notice arrives, please remember to renew! And if
you’re not yet a member do call the Visitor Center to ask for details of the
benefits of membership. Our number is 207-733-2180.
We are looking forward to seeing you all again this season, so until then enjoy
the spring and head on down to see us at the Visitor Center, at the easternmost
point of land in the continental USA.
